Food Stamp Ads
Oh my brothers, what has this country come to? I've recently been hearing ads on the radio for FOOD STAMPS. That's right. Our government is spending our money to put ads on the air for government 'safety net' entitlement programs. The purpose of these ads is to tell people that they probably qualify for the program when they think they don't, or shouldn't. I couldn't think of anything more ridiculous. Whatever happened to personal responsibility?!? Whatever happened to 'if I can't get it on my own, maybe I don't need it' - or 'maybe I can ask my family and friends for temporary help before I ask the federal government'.
Ok, let's examine what is behind such radical socialism in America today. What agency is responsible for distribution of food stamps? That's right - the US Department of Agriculture. The USDA is normally a standard government bureaucracy with a standard amount of waste - which is an extreme amount of waste for any private organization. Everybody should know that for every dollar in taxes that is extorted from you, at least fifty cents is wasted and gone forever. So, how do government bureaucracies grow? They grow by pleading with congress to give them more money, using misleading stats and emotional appeals such as calling a decrease in growth a cut. NO GOVERNMENT ENTITLEMENT PROGRAM HAS EVER BEEN GIVEN LESS MONEY FROM ONE FISCAL YEAR TO THE NEXT. Like other entitlement programs, the food stamp program grows based on how many citizens it services. Check out the graph at left - shouldn't the amount of money being spent on this program decreased in those years? Let's pretend we're a bunch of hot-shot 'managers' that work for the USDA and we want to show our bosses that we're doing a good job. What would we do? Cutting waste is not acceptable because it would show that your agency does not need the resources it already has allocated - which means 'less money' next year. Of course 'less money' means a decrease in the amount of growth. Therefore, the only way to show the higher-ups that you're doing a good job is to sign as many people on to the program as possible - which translates to a greater amount of growth in the budget. What better way to do this than to advertise. Yes, ADVERTISE for entitlement programs.Maybe the family at right could miss a few meals so we don't have to pay for their diabetes and hypertension later on.
Where do America's best and brightest work? They sure as hell don't work for our federal government. Who could live with themselves when they know that half of the money they're stealing from citizens is being wasted. Who likes the fact that accomplishing the main objectives of the bureau would result in a socialist welfare state. Success is not rewarded and failure is not punished in public employment. Do you know how hard it is to fire somebody who works for the federal government? If they're a minority you might as well forget about it.
This is all part of Katrina mentality. No matter what hole I put myself into, it is the responsibility of the federal government to bail me out of it - especially if I'm poor. What if all those people who lived BELOW SEA LEVEL in New Orleans moved to the top of Mt. Ranier, there was an eruption, and all of their homes were lost. How is it the responsiblity of the federal government to build them new houses and provide for their every need in the interim?
America is the greates nation in the history of the world. That is all being jeopardized by the idea that people aren't responsible for their own decisions, and that it's the job of the federal government to provide cradle to grave support in every aspect of life. Why am I so upset about this? Because TAXES ARE MY NUMBER ONE EXPENSE. Above anything else, I pay more money to the federal government. To me, that is too disgusting for words.

while i agree on much of what your are saying about Self Reliance -
i will leave you with an even better thought -
Unfortunately, the people the advertising is reaching might not be the type of people you want to get onto food stamps.
Most people already know about food stamps. If you are in such poverty you need government assistance and KNOW you qualify, most people have already contacted those agencies. The people who they are advertising to? People who probably don't NEED food stamps, but WANT *FREE* food.
This makes me sad for the families who really DO need assistance. Just another way for a few bad apples to ruin the bunch - but it seems like the apple picker is picking up even MORE rotten apples than ever before!
i'll leave you with a nice thought:
While living in Westport, i would routinely see people using food stamps to purchase alcohol. Where is the checker at the supermarket stopping them from making this *purchase*? The checker takes the food stamp, and gives them cash back!!! They don't even care!
I know food stamps have changed. I believe now instead of getting cash back (which i can't believe this was practiced for so long! when i was young, i think we took food stamps to buy a $.50 Little Debbie snack, and then took the cash to buy cigarettes!) it is on a credit card which gets refilled with credits every month. Thank god SOMEONE came up with that system! You're right about federal employees not being the brightest crayons in the box!
just a warm fuzzy to make you think.
it makes me sad to think of legitimate people in need - possibly getting funding CUT due to the out of control increase of demand.
Amen Cas. There's a fundamental flaw in most gov't entitlement programs - complete lack of oversight.
Nice vote by the way ;)
The only experience I had with food stamps was when I worked at a bakery for a summer job. We accepted them for BIRTHDAY CAKES. Just plain ones, one color icing, nothing fancy. But, people would get greedy and wonder why they couldn't order a cake from the book that had all the fancy Disney designs on them. Now, that's a misplaced sense of entitlement if I've ever seen one.

` Indeed. I must say, I'm on food stamps because I don't have a frickin' real job, and I don't have one because I need medical insurance, which I get from the government because they don't think I have a job.
` ..not that I'd disqualify if they knew....
The point is, Spoony, that the people that are not already on it - and don't seek it out on their own - are being recruited by big brother to start sucking on the tit.
The amount of money the fed taxes and spends is astronomical. Most of it is wasted and a lot of it is fraudulent and exhorbinent. The federal budget gets bigger ever year, regardless of partisan politics and/or growth of GDP - and therefore tax revenue.
Here's a warm fuzzy for everybody... How can the free market system do a check or balance on an ever-growing, bloated government?
` Oh, right. That is indeed underhanded. And sick. You know, half the people on SSI don't need it, and a lot of people who need it don't have it... sometimes they die before they can get it!
