Ode to Dr. Marten
It occurred to me the other day that I should write a post about the virtues of my favorite brand of footwear - Dr. Martens. I have circulating at least one pair of 'Docs' for at least 10 years. I currently wear Docs almost every day. I have a pair of black 5-eye and a pair of brown 4-eye shoes that I wear exclusively for work (both in 'classic unisex' style). I've had my black pair for the entirety of this century, and they have become my most comfortable pair of shoes. The outside leather is durable but still soft, and the sole has retained most of it's tread even though the shoes have about a million miles on them. The characteristic yellow stitching has remained as bright as ever through assaults by dirt and shoe polish. I've only had my brown pair for about 3 years, so they're just getting to the really comfortable stage. Before I had these shoes I was known to be seen in a pair of 10-eye navy blue Docs with steel toes. Although impractical in a professional environment the boots were quite at home at the grounds in which I used to stomp. I, too, have also owned a pair of the ubiquitous 8-eye black boots which hold the honor of being the only Docs I've ever grown out of.

Bottom line; Docs are durable, comfortable footwear and are a good choice regardless of social connotations associated with them.

Here, here! My brown pair of the quasi-boots have lasted me since 1995. I remember because I saved up for them and they cost $110. I love my more sylish Mary Janes in black and white, too. They were a pain in the butt to find, but I had my heart set on them when I saw a friend wearing them.

holy crap - I've had so many pairs!
I currently have black 3 buckle mary janes, 8 hold black, and 20 hole black.
I've had a shitton - but had to downsize as i was pushing maximum capacity of my shoe rack. None of them had worn out - i'm sure they're still goin somewhere!
What movie is this?
Marty DiBergi: David St. Hubbins... I must admit I've never heard anybody with that name.
David St. Hubbins: It's an unusual name, well, he was an unusual saint, he's not a very well known saint.
Marty DiBergi: Oh, there actually is, uh... there was a Saint Hubbins?
David St. Hubbins: That's right, yes.
Marty DiBergi: What was he the saint of?
David St. Hubbins: He was the patron saint of quality footwear.
No, not close at all.
top gun, dood. fer sure.
it is odd indeed that you post this ode. I just purchased a new pair of Docs one week ago to the day. I have been Docless for a couple of years. My last pair were dispatched early and laid to rest after a drunken motorcycle crash. I had forgotten what a great shoe they really are. Ive fallen in love with Docs all over again !
Also.......
I believe that scene is from SPINAL TAP ?
WINNER!!!
That exchange is between Marty (Rob Reiner) and David (Michael Mckean). I just watched that the other day, it's a classic. I hear that troupe is coming out with a new movie soon.
Denny, if you're going to be in the KC area soon we should get together for a beer.
Thanks Aaron I'll keep that in mind i go through kcmo all the time. The new movie i think is called "For Your Consideration"
yup, Jade and I are going to go see it tonight. Spinal Tap was okay, but I like it the least of the Chris Guest movies. My fave is Waiting for Guffman followed closely by Best in Show.
I like it this way:
4: Waiting for Guffman
3: This is Spinal Tap
2: A Mighty Wind
1: Best in Show
I might have to drag somebody out to see For Your Consideration.
Laura, I think you might need a remedial education in quality motion pictures.
Yes, I agree...Laura needs the crash course if she can't remember Top Gun. Granted, she was a little young for it at the time. As for "Consideration".....it was pretty good. It was a little more serious and a little weirder than his other movies, but I liked it a lot. It wasn't done in the documentary style of the other movies, but other than that the humor is very similar to everything else he's done.
